This unique learning experience gives students and recent graduates the opportunity to work alongside state representatives at the Indiana Statehouse during a session of the Indiana General Assembly. Full-time, paid internships are offered in the policy, communications, fiscal analysis, member services, and IBLC divisions of the caucus.

Intern with the Indiana House Democrats

  • Write and edit news releases, statements, op-eds and digital content

    • Generate original pitches for news media and social media with the target of engaging new and existing audiences

    • Assist staff in designing social media graphics, creating videos and taking/editing photos

    • Develop innovative social media strategies (TikTok, Twitter, etc.) to drive engagement and advocacy while increasing public awareness of state politics

    • Assist with event planning and staffing for events that the Black Legislative Caucus hosts

    • Assist with Black Legislative Caucus meetings including taking detailed notes and preparing minutes for future meetings

    • Perform all the duties of a Legislative and Constituent Services intern

    • Assist state representatives and their legislative staff with daily tasks and preparation for meetings and events

    • Facilitate written and verbal correspondence between state agencies, constituents and representatives to resolve issues

    • Research and respond to legislative questions posed by legislators and constituents

    • May assist policy staff by covering committees and preparing reports

    • Staff floor sessions of the Indiana House of Representatives to monitor and track legislative activity

    • Staff legislative committees and prepare committee reports for legislators

    • Serve as primary manager of extensive amounts of digital information

    • Research and analyze legislation; draft summaries and talking points

    • Design handouts, flyers, posters and various print publications for internal and external audiences

    • Collaborate with staff to design digital marketing graphics

    • Digital photography – capturing, editing and organizing images (training can be provided if needed)

    • Record each day’s legislative session and maintain the video archive

    • May assist with writing, editing and video production projects based on skill sets

    • Perform various tasks related to administration of the Internship Program that could include meeting preparation and event coordination

    • Track legislation, prepare bill summaries and write talking points based on Ways and Means Committee action

    • Assist the Ways and Means staff with the interpretation and analysis of committee and second reading floor amendments

    • Create reports and information sheets that are visually appealing and help explain budget and tax proposals

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Applications are currently closed for the 2025 Legislative Session Internship Program. Check back in summer 2025 for the application for the 2026 Legislative Session Internship Program.

    Interviews will take place from August through November. Successful candidates will be notified by the end of November.

  • The internship typically begins with a mandatory orientation week in late December or early January. The Indiana General Assembly meets for four months in odd-numbered years and two-and-a-half months in even-numbered years. Our internships will normally continue for a few business days following the end of each legislative session.

  • It is not recommended that you take more than one course during the internship and any courses taken cannot occur during normal business hours. Interns who need to take classes during the internship are encouraged to take online courses or participate in the 300-level political science class that is offered at the Indiana Statehouse. This 3-credit-hour course is specifically designed for students who participate in an internship with the Indiana General Assembly. Interested students are asked to speak with their advisor regarding how this internships fits into their education requirements before coming in for an interview.

  • The internship is a full-time job. Interns typically work 7.5 hours per day between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday. Some days require interns to stay longer then 7.5 hours. Working more than 7.5 hours in a day will not garner overtime pay. Interns are not eligible for vacation or paid sick days off.

    Interns are paid $900 biweekly before tax withholding. In addition, one Indiana House Democratic Caucus intern will be selected to receive a $3,000 scholarship sponsored by Verizon Communications, Inc.

  • Academic credit is typically available to interns who make prior arrangements through their school. Each school has its own procedures and requirements related to this academic credit.

  • Interns will have access to free parking provided by the state during the internship.

  • No. Internships with the state legislature are partisan. Applicants should decide if they want a Democrat or Republican internship and then apply only for that internship. Interns should be willing to support the goals of the elected members they work for even if their personal beliefs on a specific issue are not aligned. Applicants who personally identify which political party their beliefs most closely align with are more successful in the program.
