State Rep. Chris Campbell urges expansion to renters’ maximum deduction
INDIANAPOLIS - State Representative Chris Campbell (D-West Lafayette) today offered a proposal to nearly double the maximum renter’s deduction in Indiana.
Amendment 10 to House Bill 1002 would have expanded the maximum renter’s deduction for state income taxes from $3,000 to $5,000 per tax year.
“A majority of residential properties in West Lafayette are rental units,” Campbell said. “This expanded deduction would be of tremendous benefit to many renters in House District 26 and around the state. With rent increasing rapidly in many high demand areas, including West Lafayette, this expanded deduction would provide thousands in relief to many who are struggling to stay in their home.
“It is time for the supermajority to start acting on the everyday pocket book issues that really matter to Hoosiers. I will continue to support legislation that addresses Indiana’s growing housing crisis.”
House Republicans rejected the proposal with a vote of 25-59.
