Pryor Outlines Programs Available to Help Hoosiers Pay for Higher Education
INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Cherrish Pryor (D-Indianapolis) said today there are a series of scholarships, grants, and programs offered through the state of Indiana to help Hoosiers pay for the costs of higher education, and she encouraged students to explore these options in the months to come.
“On a regular basis, I hear from my constituents about the staggering costs of a higher education,” Pryor said. “I want them to know that there are ways for students to offset those costs, and they can help make a college education affordable and attainable. I wanted to provide a listing of several of these programs, because some of the application deadlines are coming up in the next few weeks. I encourage everyone to take a close look at these programs and see if they qualify.”
The scholarships, grants, and programs include:
The 21st Century Scholars Program provides up to four years of college tuition assistance for students who demonstrated financial need, academic success, and a commitment to the ideals of the program. Students must apply during their 7th or 8th grade year. The application deadline is June 30 following completion of 8th grade. Children in foster care may apply after the 8th grade.
The William A. Crawford Minority Teacher Scholarship is available to minority students who plan to teach in an accredited school in Indiana. The application deadline is September 4.
The Mitch Daniels Early Graduation Scholarship provides students who graduate from a public high school at least one year early with a one-time grant to use on college tuition, fees, and other expenses. The application deadline is September 4.
The Earline S. Rogers Student Teaching Stipend for Minorities enables students to participate in a student teaching post or a school administration position as part of degree requirements. The application deadline for the fall term is October 4 and the spring term is January 31.
The Student Teaching Stipend for High-Needs Fields is available for those whoare interested in teaching math, science, or special education at a middle school or high school. The application deadline for the fall term is October 4 and the spring term is January 31.
EARN Indiana is a work/study program to give students real-world experience and funds for college expenses. The application deadline is March 10.
The Frank O’Bannon Grant is need-based support that can beused for tuition and fees. The application deadline is March 10.
The Adult Student Grant is a $1,000 grant that helps adults continue or start a college education. Applications are accepted year-round.
