Moseley sponsored legislation to bring money back into Portage
A bipartisan piece of legislation sponsored by State Rep. Chuck Mosely (D-Portage) will bring funds back to Portage. Through Senate Enrolled Act 353, the city of Portage will be reimbursed for the remaining funds they paid into the Indiana Political Subdivision Risk Management Commission.
Created in the 1980s, the buy-in fund was intended to help local governments acquire liability insurance for tort claims. With changes in the insurance market since then making this program largely obsolete, there have been no continuing members in this program since 2018. Senate Enrolled Act 353 will permanently close the fund and return the remaining $5 million back to local governments that still had money in the fund. Along with the South Shore commuter rail line, the city of Portage will have funds returned. The act passed through both chambers and now awaits a signature from Gov. Eric Holcomb.
Moseley offered the following statement today regarding the act:
“I am very proud to be a sponsor of this bipartisan legislation, and I look forward to seeing what the city of Portage is able to do with its fair share of the funds. The Indiana Political Subdivision Risk Management Commission was a much-needed fund when it was established, and the leftover funds now create an opportunity for growth in the areas being reimbursed. This is a fantastic example of the good that can happen when we in the legislature can work together to help our constituents.”
