Errington votes to send public retirees, including teachers, a 13th check this year

INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Sue Errington (D-Muncie) today voted to send public retirees a 13th check this year. After today’s vote, House Bill 1004 has passed the House of Representatives and is heading to the Senate for consideration.

Errington released the following statement celebrating the bill’s passage:

“Despite a unanimous push from the House last year, House Bill 1028 which called for the establishment of a 13th Check, was left unheard by the Senate. If passed, this bill would have supplemented payment for retirees by millions of dollars. Instead, Hoosier retirees have been forced to endure the brunt of heightened inflation costs alone, despite billions of dollars existing in state reserves. This year, our legislature must make good on our promise to retirees and implement a 13th Check.

“Aside from our moral obligation to provide financial relief for retirees, the financial incentives of a 13th Check should not be overlooked. With more money lining their pockets, retirees can spend more money on local businesses and put money directly back into our economy. In other words, when we support the 13th Check, we support the growth of Indiana's economy.

“House Bill 1004 has my full support. This year, I call on the General Assembly to do right by Hoosiers and support our retired workers.”
