From State Rep. Linda Lawson: Thank you for the opportunity to serve
The 2018 Legislative Session was my last session as your State Representative as I decided not to seek re-election this fall. My term as a representative of Indiana House District 1 will come to an end on November 6, 2018. I will always be thankful for the opportunity to serve on behalf of the people of Hammond and Whiting.
I’m proud of what we have been able to accomplish by working together the past 20 years. While it hasn’t always been easy, I feel as if I’ve fought for the right things and tried to give a voice to those who do not always have one.
My years as an officer with the Hammond Police Department influenced my work to help victims of domestic violence, sex crimes and human trafficking, as well as ensure our first responders have the tools and training they need to be successful. A lifelong love for animals led me to work tirelessly on our animal cruelty laws and protective regulations for all animals.
This session also marked the 20th year in a row I have introduced a wage equity bill to guarantee equal pay for equal work for all members of our society. That is a fight I hope will continue, as we have yet to acknowledge the disparities that still exist for women and the effect it has on our children and society as a whole.
I am looking forward to the next phase of my life, including spending time with my two daughters and granddaughter. I remain very encouraged by your ideas and enthusiasm, and I am confident we can continue to make our community a better place to live and work.
