Smith votes to send public retirees, including teachers, a 13th check this year

Yesterday, State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) voted to send public retirees a 13th check this year. After yesterday's vote, House Bill 1004 has passed the House of Representatives and is heading to the Senate for consideration. 
 
Smith released the following statement celebrating the bill’s passage: 

 “This bill will provide our state retirees with some extra peace of mind in these trying economic times. A 13th check can make an abundance of difference for those on a fixed income, and I was proud to support this legislation to help Hoosiers in need. After being left out of the Republican budget last session, I’m glad to see this as a priority for every representative, regardless of party affiliation.”
