Smith statement on the passing of State Sen. Jean Breaux

State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) released the following statement mourning the passing of State Sen. Jean Breaux: 

“It was a great honor, privilege and pleasure to serve alongside a leader like Sen. Jean Breaux. I am heartbroken that our state has lost such a powerful presence in the state legislature, and I have lost a friend.

“Jean was a warrior for bringing justice and equity to all Hoosiers. She fought tirelessly for policies to improve the health outcomes for Black mothers and Hoosier women, protect the hard-earned money of consumers, and give a voice to those who are voiceless – particularly citizens of our state living in poverty.

“She was practical in her solutions, thoughtful about her comments, and she added a level of sensitivity that will be greatly missed. Jean’s family and loved ones are in my prayers during this difficult time.”
