Shackleford receives award for being a leader on health care advocacy and policy for minority communities
INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Robin Shackleford received the Honorable William “Bill” Crawford Minority Health Power Award during the 2019 Minority Health Initiative Annual Luncheon on Sept. 17.
Shackleford received the award for her advocacy as a member of the Indiana General Assembly to eliminate minority health disparities and chronic health conditions while also working tirelessly to develop health policies that increase access to quality care for the most vulnerable members of our communities and ensure that resources are available in these communities.
“It is such an honor to receive this award named after the honorable Bill Crawford, who was a deeply respected legislator in the Indiana House of Representatives and one of my mentors,” said Shackleford.
“As former chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and one of the longest-serving African-American legislators in our state's history, Crawford leaves behind a true legacy of selfless public service.
“I learned a lot from Rep. Crawford and I hope to continue fulfilling his legacy of community first,” she continued.
“I will continue to be a voice in the Indiana General Assembly that lifts up minority communities in my district and across the state.”
The Honorable William “Bill” Crawford Minority Health Power Award honors the life and legacy of longtime Indiana State Rep. Bill Crawford, who represented the 98th District from 1972-2012. When Crawford retired in 2012, he was the longest-serving African-American state lawmaker in the country.
