Representative Summers’ incentive to support improving teacher practices advances
INDIANAPOLIS – Members of the Indiana House unanimously passed legislation authored by State Representative Vanessa Summers (D-Indianapolis) that creates a study committee to review special education instructors’ teaching methods in the classroom.
“The focus of this study would be on applied behavior analysis (ABA), which are intensive therapy techniques and principles that are meant to bring meaningful and positive changes in behavior with children who have autism and other related disorders,” said Summers.
The study committee would focus on the need to license individuals who practice applied behavior analysis in the classroom.
This type of training and curriculum is needed to help teachers of special education services and independent centers that practice applied behavior analysis and look into what kind of oversight the centers will receive.
On February 14, House Bill 1644 unanimously passed through the House Committee on Employment, Labor, and Pensions.
Today, this legislation passed through the Indiana House with a vote of 96 to 0 and will now move to the Senate for further review.
