Rep. Gregory W. Porter honors Tindley Tigers for winning state basketball title
INDIANAPOLIS – Members of the Indiana House today joined State Representative Gregory W. Porter (D-Indianapolis) in congratulating the Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School’s boys basketball team for winning the school’s first state title in any sport.
Tindley secured the title on March 25 by defeating Lafayette Central Catholic 51-49 on a basket by Hunter White with just five seconds left.
“The title game demonstrated the grit and teamwork shown by the Tindley Tigers all season,” Porter said. “Seven different players scored in a game that featured four ties and five lead changes.”
The Tigers are led by head coach Robert Wonnell, who in his 10 years of coaching has won three sectionals, one regional, and a semistate prior to the 2017 title.
“I also wish to pay credit to the young men who play on this team,” Porter said. “They are not just outstanding players, but well-rounded and dedicated young men.
“Their school encourages students to participate in their communities, and the Tiger players take part in the Reclaiming the Village Rites of Passage, a program operated by the External Affairs Department of the Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County that teaches leadership and life skills,” he added.
“The hard work and togetherness of the players and their coaches have led to some incredible achievements throughout the basketball season, including a 24-5 season record,” Porter concluded.
