INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Gregory W. Porter (D-Indianapolis), Democratic member of the House Public Health Committee, recognized the Alzheimer's Association Greater Indiana Chapter for their service to Hoosiers during today's Indiana State Advocacy Day.

House Concurrent Resolution 12 honors the Alzheimer's Association for being the leading voice for Alzheimer's disease and dementia advocacy in Indiana. The Greater Indiana Chapter provides service in 73 counties, thanks to the work of more than 400 volunteers.

An estimated 110,000 Hoosiers are currently living with Alzheimer's disease.

“I know I speak for Hoosiers statewide today as I express my sincere gratitude for the advocacy and service of the Alzheimer's Association and its Greater Indiana Chapter,” Porter said.

“Alzheimer's disease and dementia are cruel afflictions that take an enormous toll on thousands of Hoosiers and their families. These are not struggles that should be born alone. Thankfully, the Alzheimer's Association Greater Indiana Chapter and its many dedicated volunteers ensure that those Hoosiers affected by these diseases have the support and care that they need to overcome it. I am proud to stand beside this amazing organization today and look forward to working with them for many sessions to come.”

Porter, a longtime champion for Alzheimer's awareness, successfully passed his House Bill 1123 through the House last week. House Bill 1123 adds a member of the Alzheimer's Association Greater Indiana Chapter to the Indiana Medicaid Advisory Committee, which provides feedback on the state's Medicaid program and its policies.

“Alzheimer's disease is the 6th-leading cause of death in Indiana,” Porter added. “It is crucial that Hoosiers living with Alzheimer's and dementia have access to the care that they need to overcome these diseases.

“Representation is key to ensuring that Hoosiers can access those resources through Medicaid. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to see a member of the Alzheimer's Association Greater Indiana Chapter added to this committee.”
