Porter comments on overnight gun violence: “Yet another senseless act of violence has taken a young life”
Last night, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) identified 13-year-old Dayon Darnell Lyles as a victim in a fatal shooting. Police do not believe that Lyles was the intended target, and a suspect or suspects have not yet been identified. State Rep. Gregory W. Porter (D-Indianapolis), who represents the area where the shooting took place, issued the following statement:
“This morning, we woke up to the news that yet another senseless act of violence has taken a young life. My prayers go out to this young man's family and loved ones who are now going through the unthinkable. As a community, we can never numb ourselves to the horrors of children being gunned down in our streets. Too many people in our city have been killed in an act of gun violence, too many futures have been destroyed in a matter of seconds.
“I echo calls from IMPD that those responsible for the death of Dayon Lyles need to turn themselves in. As a lawmaker, I will continue to advocate for common sense gun legislation that will hopefully help prevent more tragedies like this from occurring in the future.”
