Pack calls for action after water shutoff notices at Indianapolis apartments
INDIANAPOLIS – In response to the news that tenants living in units owned by Berkley Commons LLC and JPC Affordable Housing Foundation Inc. – who are being sued by the city of Indianapolis and Citizens Energy – will have their utilities shut off in the coming months, State Rep. Renee Pack (D-Indianapolis) issued the following statement:
“I am outraged at this situation. Around 16,000 kids are starting school next week, and many of them now won’t even have water in their own homes,” Pack said. “We have to do all that is necessary to provide dignity in housing to these children and their families and prevent these Hoosiers from losing access to utilities. I'm calling on the courts to expedite the lawsuits against the property owners. We must continue to hold slumlords accountable for defrauding their tenants, but we have to ensure that innocent people and children aren't being punished for the actions of their landlords.”
