Michigan City forum will help protect seniors against fraud
STATEHOUSE – Indiana House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath from Michigan City will be joined by officials from the Indiana Attorney General’s office at a public meeting in Michigan City on October 3 to give area seniors tips on how to protect themselves from scams like identity theft.
The forum is scheduled to run from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on October 3 at the Michigan City Senior Center [get directions], Two On the Lake. Pelath will be joined by Linda Gurgel from the Attorney General’s office.
“This meeting is designed to give local residents a chance to find out ways to help safeguard against various types of consumer frauds,” Pelath said.
“One of our focuses will be on protecting yourself from identity theft, which remains one of the major crimes that impact people of all ages,” he continued. “In addition, we will provide information on the latest scams that can affect people through the phone, via everyday mail and through the e-mails on their home computers.
We also will show you how to check your credit report, freeze your credit, and how to report anything fraudulent to the proper authorities,” Pelath said. “I am very much aware of how these criminals like to focus on hurting seniors, and I want to give everyone a chance to see what they can do to protect themselves.”
