IBLC vows vigilance in monitoring new US Attorney General Sessions

IBLC, News & Media

INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Cherrish Pryor (D-Indianapolis), chair of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus (IBLC), today issued the following statement on the U.S. Senate confirmation of U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) as the new U.S. Attorney General:

“The IBLC’s opposition to this selection has been grounded in a factual examination of Sen. Sessions’ record, which has demonstrated a long and vocal opposition to issues of concern to disenfranchised communities. We do not have confidence he will support and uphold the Voting and Civil Rights Acts, which have been under attack in recent years. His views are alien to many of us, and it is genuinely shocking to see the members of the U.S. Senate believe that he should be the leading law enforcement official of our land.

“Now that he is in office, we intend to hold our new Attorney General to the highest of standards, which means defending the rights of all, not just a privileged few.

“He says he is committed to upholding the law. We shall make sure that he does, and we shall be unceasing in pointing out when he does not.”
