Harris to serve on Latino affairs, pension panels

News & Media

INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Earl Harris Jr. (D-East Chicago) today announced that he has been selected to serve on the Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs and the Interim Study Committee on Pension Management Oversight this summer.

The interim committees explore a range of legislative topics. At the hearings, members listen to the testimony of experts and the general public. During the legislative session, permanent committees in both chambers often consider bills based upon the interim committees’ findings.

“I am hopeful that using my voice when it comes to Latino affairs will lead to lasting change for the community, especially when it comes to how we respond to the setbacks they are facing due to COVID-19,” Harris said.

“Furthermore, it is through meetings with the Pension Management Oversight Committee that led me to author House Bill 1019 last year, which would have increased special death benefits for firefighters and police officers.

“It's critical for the General Assembly to learn all we can before session so we can make the most informed decisions when the time comes to draft and discuss legislation.”
