Hamilton shares key takeaways from White House conference on gun violence prevention
Yesterday, June 26, State Rep. Carey Hamilton (D-Indianapolis) attended the White House Safer States Legislative Convening. State legislators from around the nation were invited to attend this Convening for their dedication to reducing gun violence. At the event, Rep. Hamilton heard from senior White House officials as well as other state lawmakers on effective policy solutions to the gun violence epidemic plaguing our country.
“I was honored to have been invited back to the White House to discuss an issue so vital to our nation. The epidemic of gun violence has touched every community in every state from coast to coast. Communication between state governments on what policy approaches are working is one of the most important steps to finding effective solutions to this deadly issue.
“A study from the Center for American Progress shows that so far in 2024, gun violence is declining for the second year straight at a historic rate. We have seen significant public safety investments under the Biden-Harris Administration such as the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act and the 2022 Bipartisan Safe Communities Act. The White House Safer States Initiative is a key partnership to get states the resources we need to see progress at a community level.
“It is clear that there is no single solution to the epidemic of gun violence. We need an all of the above approach - working in collaboration with our public safety community, public health professionals, and community organizations - to take on this public health crisis.
“Gun violence is personal. No amount of productive policy discussions will take away the pain felt by those in our community who have lost a loved one to a senseless act of violence. I return home with a renewed dedication to making Indiana a place where all Hoosiers can live safely, without fear of losing their life to a firearm.”
