Hamilton reflects on anniversary of Dobbs protest at the Statehouse
June 25, 2024 marks the two-year anniversary of thousands of Hoosiers showing up to the Indiana Statehouse to protest the United States Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
State Rep. Carey Hamilton (D-Indianapolis) released the following statement on the anniversary of that protest:
“On this day in 2022, I stood alongside thousands of Hoosier women as they showed up to the Statehouse to tell Indiana lawmakers that they will not stand by and watch their rights stripped away. I gave my word on that day to do everything in my power to protect women’s autonomy and access critical health care.
“In the weeks following this protest, GOP lawmakers made Indiana the first state in the nation to strip women and girls of the right to choose. Two years later, Indiana’s near-total abortion ban still stands.
“I have been fighting to restore bodily autonomy for Hoosier women and girls ever since it was taken away. This year, I co-authored a resolution to allow ballot initiatives in Indiana and give Hoosiers the ability to weigh in on issues directly at the ballot box. It is our job as lawmakers to represent our constituents. The GOP near-total abortion ban does not align with the views of most Hoosier voters in this state. It is time to give both Hoosier women and Hoosier voters the right to choose.”
