GiaQuinta responds to Ohio Issue 1 outcome
Yesterday, voters in Ohio voted overwhelmingly against Issue 1, a proposal that would have made it more difficult to amend the state’s constitution and would have likely allowed the Republican-led State Legislature to restrict abortion in the state.
House Democratic Leader Phil GiaQuinta (D-Fort Wayne) today offered the following statement regarding the special election:
“This decision was a win for Ohioans, a win for women and a win for families in the Buckeye state. Ohio – and the six other states where citizens were granted the right to decide the fate of abortion in the state at the ballot box – are further proof that Republican anti-choice policies are not popular among the vast majority of Americans. Last summer, our caucus fought to give this same power to Hoosiers, and House Republicans rejected it. They rejected this amendment simply because they know what we’ve all long-known: that Hoosiers, like the majority of Americans, believe that the decision to receive an abortion is best left up to a woman, her family and her health care provider.
“As House Democrats continue to fight for a woman’s right to control her own body and her own destiny, I hope the outcome in this Ohio special election is a reminder to Republicans across the nation that their anti-choice, anti-science policies cannot withstand the will of the American people.”
