DeLaney reacts to new ranking of Indianapolis as 6th most dangerous U.S. city for pedestrians
A new ranking found that Indianapolis is the 6th most dangerous city for pedestrians in the nation. This study is a reflection of a steady increase of pedestrian-involved traffic accidents the city has seen over the past few years. It also comes on the heels of a spate of pedestrian-involved accidents that saw 13 people hit between Saturday, Sept. 16 and Monday, Sept. 18.
“This is a troubling report that only confirms the concerns that officials around Indianapolis have been raising for years,” Rep. Ed DeLaney (D-Indianapolis) said. “I welcome the continued media interest in pedestrian safety.
“The bottom line is that the Mayor, City-County Council and Democrats in the legislature who represent the county are right to deem pedestrian safety a pressing issue.
“Members of the majority in the General Assembly rushed ahead to act as City-County Council themselves by passing a one-county ordinance banning efforts to make intersections safer for vulnerable road users. They need to reconsider their position of prioritizing the convenience of drivers over the lives of pedestrians.”
