Campbell: ‘This special session will show the true colors of Statehouse Republicans’
INDIANAPOLIS – On Wednesday (July 6, 2022), State Representative Chris Campbell (D-West Lafayette) joined Statehouse Democrats in a press conference to discuss plans for the upcoming special session.
Governor Holcomb signed a proclamation calling lawmakers to reconvene for a special session starting July 6 which has since been postponed to July 25 by Statehouse Republicans. The special session will encompass providing a second Automatic Tax Refund of $225 and addressing the U.S. Supreme Court's recent ruling on abortion.
“Considering our state’s massive $6.1 billion surplus, Statehouse Republicans are simply not doing enough to help the hardworking folks who are suffering right now,” Campbell said. “The surplus is growing and is made up of Hoosier dollars, so it only makes sense for the government to give back to the people.
“We know that 43% of Hoosiers have not even received their first refund, and it may not be until December that people get the second one. A suspension on state gas taxes, on the other hand, would give immediate relief to where people are feeling the brunt of inflation– at the pump.
“I am also appalled that this session has been delayed by almost three weeks,” Campbell added. “Statehouse Republicans would choose to put off providing relief to those in need so they can spend more time scheming on all the different ways they plan to take away the rights and autonomy of women. So not only are Hoosiers suffering from the devastating effects of inflation, but they also are dealing with the knowledge that the basic foundations of privacy and liberty are about to be stripped away from us.
“To put it plainly, this special session will show the true colors of Statehouse Republicans.”
