Campbell comments on water bills not receiving a hearing
During the 2024 legislative session, multiple bills have been proposed surrounding water management: the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) and the potential LEAP pipeline. None of the bills regarding LEAP have received a hearing in committee preventing them from a vote on the House floor.
State Rep. Chris Campbell (D-West Lafayette) released the following statement:
“I find it incredibly frustrating that none of the bills relating to the IEDC or LEAP are being heard in House committees. Any legislative effort to expand Indiana’s water management regulations has been blocked. My community has been outspoken about the potential pipeline along with the rest of Tippecanoe County. It’s a salient issue that concerns thousands of Hoosiers, and hundreds of them have contacted the state legislature. I think their concerns warrant discussion and action, but leadership decided the opposite. It's heartbreaking and I think it directly clashes with my duty to speak for my community.
“We pushed for the moratorium, and I’m thankful that we have a pause on the pipeline. But what happens when the pause ends? We’re still at square one regarding water legislation and protections. A major reason our communities and local leadership pushed for a pause was to give the state legislature time to act. We’ve been denied that opportunity, but I encourage my community to continue their advocacy.”
