Beck, Hobart City Council honor state champion pole vaulter Cody Johnston
State Rep. Lisa Beck (D-Lakes of the Four Seasons) and the Hobart City Council have honored Cody Johnston of Hobart for winning a state championship in pole vaulting.
Johnston won his title at the 2019 Indiana Middle School Track and Field Championships on May 18 in Terre Haute. He secured the win by vaulting 12 feet, 6 inches.
Beck presented a Certificate of Achievement to Johnston during Wednesday’s Hobart City Council meeting.
“I will note that Cody is part of a family legacy of excellence in pole vaulting,” Beck said. “His grandfather, Jim Johnston Sr., was a pole vaulting champion at Hobart and a national champion at Purdue University. His father, Jim Jr., was a multiple state finalist before going on to coach several state champions. His uncle, Robb Johnston, and his cousin, Kyle Johnston, won state championships. Just a few days ago, Cody’s older brother Riley finished third in the state high school championships.
“Such a tradition of excellence deserves acclaim, and I am proud to recognize Cody Johnston for his accomplishments,” Beck concluded.
