Andrade recognizes Humane Indiana’s beagle-rescuing efforts
House Resolution 2, authored by House Democratic Leader Phil GiaQuinta and co-authored by State Reps. Mike Andrade (D-Munster) and Kyle Miller (D-Fort Wayne), recognizes the efforts of Humane Fort Wayne and Humane Indiana Munster in rescuing 79 beagles from animal experimentation.
Beagles are frequently chosen for animal testing because of their docile nature and small size. After an Indiana-owned facility in Virginia was raided in 2022 for breeding beagles for laboratory testing, two local humane societies stepped forward. Humane Fort Wayne and Humane Indiana Munster mobilized around the call from the U.S. Humane Society to put rescued beagles up for adoption. Humane Fort Wayne took in 50 beagles and Humane Indiana in Munster took in 29.
The issue of beagle testing has been a hot-button issue for the Indiana General Assembly since the news of the Virginian facility raid broke last year.
“As a dog father myself, I am keen on honoring the efforts of Humane Indiana in Munster in helping these furry friends find their forever homes,” Andrade said. The House Democratic Caucus has been an outspoken advocate for animal welfare, and the passing of this resolution is another step in the effort to protect animals.
