INDIANAPOLIS – The 30th anniversary of “Music in Our Schools Month” (MIOSM) was recognized today by the Indiana House of Representatives. State Rep. Melanie Wright (D-Yorktown) presented House Resolution 27 as an opportunity to support music education.
Every March since 1985, a nationwide sing-along concert has been a highlight of MIOSM. Once coined The World’s Largest Concert, the event links students across the U.S. through songs and lesson plans provided by the National Association for Music Education.
“Throughout ‘Music in Our Schools Month,’ we celebrate students and the ways that music education drives their personal and academic success,” said Wright. [At right: Rep. Melanie Wright is shown presenting this resolution.]
“Students gain practical experiences in shared responsibility, teamwork, leadership, and public performance. Music programs also develop outlets for creativity and self-expression while students acquire a degree of cultural understanding.
“The House’s recognition of the month-long celebration authenticates the study of music as basic to a well-rounded education,” she added.
Over the past 30 years, an estimated six million students, teachers, and music supporters have joined together to rejoice in the timeless power of music in our schools and communities.
