Summers commends Supreme Court decision upholding women’s access to mifepristone
INDIANAPOLIS – On Thursday, June 13, the United States Supreme Court unanimously rejected a legal challenge to the drug mifepristone. In their decision, the United States Supreme Court upheld the distribution and prescription of the medication nationwide.
State Rep. Vanessa Summers (D-Indianapolis) issued the following statement on the ruling:
“The Supreme Court made the correct decision by ruling in favor of women's health instead of giving in to unfounded fear.
“In states like Indiana with a near-total abortion ban in effect, the distribution of mifepristone is critical in protecting women's health and the right to make the healthcare decisions that best fit their needs. Access to mifepristone is healthcare. Access to the drug not only ensures that women can control their own reproductive health, it is essential for women who have suffered a miscarriage. For two decades, mifepristone has been labeled as safe and effective. The false allegations deeming the drug as dangerous are absurd and outright dangerous.
“I am relieved that mifepristone is still available for those who need it. However, this battle has not yet been won. As long as anti-choice groups continue to challenge women's reproductive rights, we must remain vigilant. I will continue to stand firm against these attacks and fight together with my fellow House Democrats to protect women's reproductive rights.”
