Strong legislative agenda pursued by State Rep. Chuck Moseley

INDIANAPOLIS — State Rep. Chuck Moseley (D-Portage) is pursuing a strong agenda on behalf of Hoosiers during the 2016 Indiana General Assembly.

Moseley saw four pieces of legislation, two of which he authored and two he coauthored, pass through the House in the past week.

Moseley authored House Bill 1187, which addresses the issue of stolen valor.

“When individuals intentionally present themselves as an active member or a veteran of the United States military in order to obtain money or property, they are disrespecting our service members and the real sacrifices that they have made,” said Moseley. “This legislation will increase the penalty for this deception.”

Under Moseley’s proposed legislation, individuals who lie about their status as an active member or veteran of the United States military, use false military certification or claim to have military honors, will be charged with a Class A misdemeanor, which carries penalties of up to one year of imprisonment and $5,000 in fines.

A second piece of legislation, authored by Moseley, will suspend a motorist’s license if that person is caught speeding in a worksite for a second time.

“Speeding in these areas poses a particular threat to worker safety. Drivers who make this error repeatedly are showing a reckless disregard for other people’s lives,” said Moseley. “By suspending a person’s license for 60 days, we can emphasize the seriousness of this offense.”

The bill will allow special licenses to be granted for people who need a vehicle to drive to and from work.

“In 2014 alone, 14 people were killed and numerous individuals were injured because of accidents that occurred in Indiana worksites,” commented Moseley. “By encouraging drivers to adhere to the listed speed, we should prevent some of these accidents.”

Moseley has also coauthored two pieces of legislation. House Bill 1222 makes some changes to the rules that condominium and homeowner associations have to follow. House Bill 1313 changes the definition of a veteran, ensuring that all Indiana service members who were discharged honorably have the same access to benefits.

“Each piece of legislation that I have pursued during this session reflects the needs of my constituents,” said Moseley. “I’m looking forward to seeing what other issues we can tackle this year.”
