Smith reacts to tragic accidental shooting of 3-year-old in Merrillville
State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D - Gary) issued the following statement in reaction to the death of a 3-year-old in Merrillville after an accidental shooting Monday evening:
“I am absolutely heartbroken to learn of the tragic death of 3-year-old King Penro on Monday. King’s family is in my prayers as they grieve this horrible loss, but I know that nothing can ease the pain of losing a child.
“It was not even three weeks ago that another Gary family suffered this pain as they buried their 2-year-old son who was accidentally shot by his 3-year-old brother. This year alone, Indiana has lost 10 poor souls after children have gained access to firearms and accidentally discharged them. At the very forefront of my thoughts and my prayers is that no more families will be put through this uniquely painful tragedy.
“In the absence of legislation on firearm storage in Indiana, I implore all gun owners to store their weapons safely, especially if there is the chance that a child will be in your home. The Merrillville Police Department has gun locks available for anyone who needs one.”
