Rep. Steven R. Stemler sends pill mill legislation to governor’s desk

INDIANAPOLIS – Rep. Steven R. Stemler (D-Jeffersonville) spoke on the floor of the Indiana House of Representatives today in support of legislation that addresses the problem of “pill mills” by sending a bill to the governor’s desk that would regulate controlled substance facilities.

Senate Bill 246 requires that owners of facilities, now commonly known as “pill mills,” who employ or contract with individuals to dispense controlled substances must maintain a controlled substance registration.

“Pill mills overprescribe prescription medicine to folks,” Stemler explained. “They have been a growing problem in my district, and in other areas of the state. They promote serious drug addiction. Right now, Indiana’s laws are so lax, so this bill would tighten oversight in regulation over these facilities.

“Senator Ron Grooms (R-Jeffersonville) and I worked together to draft a bill with the understanding that many people seriously need these prescriptions,” he added.

“This bill just helps make sure no one is falls victim to drug addiction, and that if these types of businesses come to Indiana they will comply by the law which includes tighter oversight and scrutiny.”
