INDIANAPOLIS – State Representative Steven R. Stemler (D-Jeffersonville) has been appointed to the Indiana House Ethics Committee by the House Democratic Leader, Scott Pelath from Michigan City.
Stemler is replacing the late State Rep. Earl Harris (D-East Chicago) on the committee.
“Since this committee oversees the ethical conduct of the Indiana House, it is imperative that it be populated by lawmakers who demonstrate a moral code that is beyond reproach,” said House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath from Michigan City.
“I cannot imagine any better person to fill the role so capably handled by Earl Harris through the years than Steve Stemler.”
During the 2015 Indiana General Assembly session, Stemler authored significant ethical legislation that corrects a flaw within current state law. House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1335 allows for the removal of an elected or appointed school board member who has been convicted of a felony during their term. HEA 1335 is likely to become law, as the measure has already advanced to Governor Mike Pence for final approval.
