Rep. Karlee Macer recognizes National Speech & Debate Education Day

INDIANAPOLIS – The General Assembly joined State Representative Karlee Macer (D-Indianapolis) in recognizing the 2017 National Speech and Debate Education Day (March 3).

This day serves to promote better instruction in speech and debate across all grade levels and to highlight the pivotal roles these abilities play in personal advocacy, social movements, and public policy making.

This education helps students develop important skills in communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration through the practice of public speaking.

“Statistics show that students do better when they participate in speech and debate,” said Macer. “It is giving students the confidence and knowledge to go after their dreams and reach their goals.”

Students learn not only to analyze and express complex ideas effectively but also to listen, concur, question, or dissent with reason and compassion.

“This day celebrates educators who devote in-class, after-school and weekend time to teach and support students through their journey in speech and debate practices,” said Macer. “Their hard work and encouragement has lifelong positive impacts on students.

“To celebrate this day, students work on examining powerful speeches, hold assemblies or town hall meetings and celebrate mentorships throughout their community,” she added.

“It’s an honor to recognize such an amazing program that is a crucial component of learning communication skills that stay with these students throughout their entire lives,” Macer concluded.
