Rep. Errington supports Muncie photographer at Statehouse celebration of 2019 Hoosier women artists

INDIANAPOLIS – Representative Sue Errington (D-Muncie) meets with artist Heather Steed of Muncie to view her photo “Caught by Nature” during the celebration of 2019 Hoosier Women Artists at the Statehouse.

The Hoosier Women Artists competition was established in 2008 to celebrate the importance of the arts in Indiana’s communities and showcase the work of talented female artists throughout Indiana.

This year, 39 honorees were selected from a pool of 220 entries judged by a panel of Indiana visual arts professionals. The entries were selected for display by Lieutenant Governor Suzanna Crouch and Treasurer of State Kelly Mitchell, who hosted the event along with the Indiana Arts Commission.

“I am continuously impressed by the artistic abilities of our female Hoosiers,” Errington said. “The art these women create brings a particular aspect of freedom and creativity to the State of Indiana. I want women in Indiana to continue to use their artistic talents to express themselves and the beauty of our state that surrounds them.”

The 39 pieces of artwork will be displayed in the offices of Crouch, Mitchell, Secretary of State Connie Lawson, Auditor of State Tera Klutz, Chief Justice Loretta Rush, Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick, and First Lady Janet Holcomb during the coming year.

The Hoosier Women Artists annual competition was established to celebrate Women’s History Month and highlight talented female artists throughout Indiana. The contest celebrates the wide variety of graphic arts including drawing, painting and photography. Past entries have included – but are not limited to – portraits, landscapes, still lifes, animals, buildings and abstracts. Honorees of the Hoosier Women Artists Contest will have their artwork displayed in the Indiana Statehouse for one year.
