Errington: Real ID will be required to fly by 2020
Have you heard of the Real ID? In 2005, the federal government in Washington, D.C., set new minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards under the REAL ID Act.
BEGINNING ON OCTOBER 1, 2020, a driver’s license, permit or identification card that does not comply with REAL ID standards will still allow you to drive and/or vote, but it will NOT allow you to board commercial airplanes or access military bases or certain federal facilities.
To upgrade to a REAL ID, you must visit an Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) branch and bring the proper required documents (see list below). If you have questions or trouble when collecting your documents, CALL THE BMV AT 1-888-692-6841 (toll-free) and speak with a customer service representative for help, or visit any Indiana license branch for assistance. To search for a branch near you, visit in.gov/bmv/2415.htm.
