Pryor offers amendment to help unborn, mothers following abortion ban
State Rep. Cherrish Pryor (D-Indianapolis) today offered an amendment to House Bill 1009 that would extend services to unborn children and new mothers.
Pryor's amendment would provide any government service, such as TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), that newborns are eligible for to unborn children. It was denied a vote through procedural means.
“While the abortion ban is still in limbo as we wait for the Supreme Court's decision, we need to be doing everything we can to ensure we're ready for the likely increase of babies if the ban stands. This includes making sure that unborn babies and pregnant women are able to receive the best possible prenatal care.
“While I'm disappointed this amendment didn't get a vote, I'm not surprised. Last summer, Indiana Republicans passed an abortion ban seemingly without any thought about the long-term effects on the state and Hoosier families. This amendment would have undone some of the harms the ban will have if it takes effect, and it's a shame House Republicans once again chose partisan politics over the well-being of their constituents.”
