Pelath retiring after 20 years of service
As you may know, this was my last term as your State Representative. After serving since 1998, I decided that after 20 years, it was time to pass the torch. My term as a representative of Indiana House District 9 will come to an end on November 6, 2018.
My family and I will always be grateful for the years given to us. It has been the privilege of a lifetime.
I am forever proud of what we have accomplished together. We set a course for a local public transportation revolution in Northwest Indiana, preserved thousands of middle class jobs in our area, and successfully defended access to health care for all Hoosiers. We embraced and implemented regional economic development strategies, furthered the cause of equality, and protected Lake Michigan for future generations. Time and again, we fought for a fairer, more prosperous society.
Over two decades, there are many blessings upon which to reflect. I love my community, and throughout the years, we have seen many changes for the better. There are a few regrets, of course. When I began in elected office, I thought the level of civility was troubling. Unfortunately, it has gotten worse, and there were times I could have done better myself. Passionate debates are vitally necessary, honorable, and even enjoyable. However, debating entails listening, and too often we are talking past each other or disengaging from our opponents altogether. We do not have to agree, but we do have to understand and participate. Our system is built to function amid disagreement, but no system can endure a loss of the civic spirit. Leaders and citizens at all levels must recommit to basic respect, fundamental fairness, and the ideal that we are all part of our government.
While I am leaving public service, I have no plans to disappear. In fact, I am elated by the opportunity to contribute to my community in new ways. I also plan to publicly comment, when appropriate, about matters that might advance our timeless pursuits of freedom, justice, and equality. I’m looking forward to spending more time at home, and I plan to stay active in various groups, organizations, and causes. My successor working in Indianapolis can also count on my support and advice.
I cannot ever thank you enough for the honor of being your representative.
