Pack pushes bill to prohibit veteran housing discrimination
INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Renee Pack (D-Indianapolis) filed House Bill 1087 to protect Hoosier veterans from experiencing discrimination when searching for housing. The bill would expand the Indiana fair housing statute to prohibit landlords from using a person's source of income, active military status or veteran status to deny housing.
“Currently, landlords can deny a rental contract solely based on where an applicant's income is coming from.” Pack said. “This particularly affects veterans with renter's insurance or who are receiving vouchers.”
“My bill would ensure that the resources used to help veterans stay afloat are not used against them. A person receiving financial assistance is not any less worthy of renting a home or apartment than someone who is not. It is our duty as legislators to ensure Hoosiers are not subjected to such blatant discrimination. House Bill 1087 will help all Hoosiers secure housing, and make sure that landlords are upholding a fair and equitable standard.”
