Organization Day spotlights domestic violence awareness

INDIANAPOLIS – Every year, House Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis) selects a philanthropy that the Indiana House of Representatives participates in and raises awareness for throughout the legislative session. Joined by Democratic Leader Scott Pelath of Michigan City [pictured with Speaker Bosma (left)], they announced this year’s philanthropy is the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV).

“Last year, over 1,700 victims of domestic abuse were turned away from shelters that were already at capacity,” said Bosma.

“This is a difficult issue to address, as often the victims go unseen and unheard. The Indiana State Legislature will do its best to address this issue head-on by raising awareness throughout this year in addition to appropriating additional funds to make sure victims are being served.”

ICADV is a statewide coalition that provides technical assistance, resources, information and training to domestic violence awareness programs, support agencies and concerned individuals. ICADV focuses on prevention of domestic abuse, legislative advocacy, public awareness, advocate training and legal assistance.

“Domestic violence affects so many people throughout our state,” said Laura Berry, Executive Director of the ICADV. “We are happy to work with the House legislators on this issue and are proud to be the recipient of the Speaker’s charity initiative in 2015, which will support local domestic violence programs.”

Legislators and staff brought in pillows, bedding, towels, art supplies for children, cleaning and office supplies as well as other items for the ICADV to distribute to local domestic violence shelters throughout the state.

“The terror that is felt by those who must face abuse on a daily basis cannot be ignored, and we will not ignore it,” said Leader Pelath.

“These are difficult issues to confront, but we must face them…for the sake of those who have suffered for far too long. I look forward to seeing the Indiana State Legislature shine a light on what has happened and what must be done to stop it.”
