Miller admonishes passage of transphobic bill
Senate Bill 480 – a bill that prohibits minors from receiving gender-affirming care even with parental and physician consent – passed through the House of Representatives today and now heads to Gov. Eric Holcomb's desk. State Rep. Kyle Miller (D-Fort Wayne) offered the following statement following the vote:
“This legislation the Republican supermajority passed today is cruel and gives the state government far too much freedom to interfere in the day-to-day lives of Hoosier families. My heart is with Indiana's transgender community and their loved ones.
“Beyond the cruelty of this legislation, bills like this will ultimately harm all Hoosiers in the end. We in the General Assembly have spent much of this session working to enhance our workforce, and simultaneously, Republicans are telling people that they aren't welcome in our state. How can we expect to bring more businesses, workers and families to Indiana when we focus so much of our energy in the General Assembly interfering in the private matters of Hoosier families and persecuting people who are simply trying to live their most authentic lives? This legislation – and bills like it – will drive people and businesses away from Indiana and undo the work we've been doing to create a 21st Century economy in Indiana. This effort from state Republicans to fight unwinnable culture wars each legislative session is irresponsible governance that pits Hoosier against Hoosier, and we all lose in the end.”
