Medical school peer review bill now awaits governor’s signature

INDIANAPOLIS – Legislation sponsored by State Rep. Charlie Brown (D-Gary) that would ensure the proficiency of Indiana’s medical school students is making its way to Governor Mike Pence for final approval.

Members of the Indiana House of Representatives today passed Senate Bill 293, which authorizes Indiana medical schools to implement peer review committees. Since House members made no changes to SB 293, it goes directly to Gov. Pence for his consideration.

“As far as credentials and patient care go, future practicing physicians and medical providers will be held to a higher evaluative standard with this legislation,” Brown said. “The peer review committee would also investigate the merits of complaints based on a med student’s competence or conduct.”

The American Medical Association supports the medical peer review process and recommends that evaluations should be based on appropriateness, medical necessity, and efficiency of services in order to assure quality medical care.

SB 293 specifies that confidentiality of medical information obtained and used in conducting peer review must be protected.
