Macer continues work as a strong advocate for veterans
I consider my work advocating on behalf of veterans to be one of my most important roles in the legislature. I was honored to be recognized recently by The American Legion for the work we completed in 2019 and selected to receive their Distinguished Public Servant Award.
The work to improve the quality of life for Hoosier Veterans is never done, so I take my role as an overseer of the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA) seriously. This position cannot be taken lightly, which is why it was so important for me to use my leadership role to speak up when news broke last fall about the misuses of IDVA funds intended to help veterans, military personnel and their families. We worked tirelessly to pass a series of reforms that will prevent further corruption and harm to our state’s veterans and I will continue to advocate for more transparency and accountability.
In addition to these accountability measures, I also co-authored the bills below to work to eliminate the burdens placed on Hoosier veterans and their families:
- Income tax deduction increases for military retirement and survivor’s benefits (House Bill 1010)
- Expansion of veterans health programs and co-pay elimination (Senate Bill 491)
