Macer continues her avid support of Indiana’s military veterans

INDIANAPOLIS — State Rep. Karlee Macer (D-Speedway) has been a strong advocate for Indiana veterans during past sessions and this year is no exception.

Macer is the coauthor of three bipartisan bills that have been approved by House members to support Indiana veterans.

House Bill 1183 would allow a parent who is unable to care for his or her child for a period of time to delegate a guardian for their child for up to a year. This legislation also provides an extension allowing a parent who is on active duty in the United States military to relinquish guardianship of their child for the duration of their service.

“Our veterans should be able to serve with confidence, knowing that their child is in the custody of their assigned guardian,” said Macer. “This bill does an outstanding job providing an option for parents who are facing difficult times that could impact their ability to care for their child.”

In a separate measure, Macer is working to protect Indiana veterans from instances of stolen valor.

House Bill 1187 will change the terms of punishment for an individual who lies about their status as an active member or veteran of the United States military, uses false military certification or claims to have military honors. The proposed changes will make stolen valor a Class A misdemeanor which includes up to one year of imprisonment and $5,000 in fines.

“This legislation will help us protect our veterans’ honor,” said Macer. “These individuals who present themselves as active members of the military or as veterans are disrespecting our service members and the sacrifices that they have made.”

The final measure, House Bill 1313, changes the definition of a veteran to ensure that all Indiana servicemen and women, who were discharged honorably, have access to the same benefits.

“This legislation will help create a clear definition of who qualifies as a veteran, ensuring that our service members have access to the benefits they deserve,” commented Macer.

Macer is continuing her record of supporting strong legislation in favor of veterans’ affairs, advocating for easier access to benefits and to put an end to veteran homelessness.

The bills now move to the Senate for further legislative consideration.
