Klinker enacts law to prevent animal abusers from getting the chance to abuse again
INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Sheila J. Klinker (D-Lafayette) co-sponsored a new state law that will help prevent animal abusers from getting the chance to abuse again. Senate Enrolled Act 474 states that a person convicted of animal abuse may not own, harbor or train a companion animal during the probation and parole period.
“Prior to this bill being signed into law, people who were convicted and sentenced for animal cruelty at a Level 6 felony and placed on probation were able to own another animal during their probation and parole period,” said Klinker.
“I’m glad this new law will prevent those found guilty of animal abuse from having the chance to own or train another animal. Our four-legged friends deserve to go to happy homes where they are treated well,” she added.
The law was ceremoniously signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb today and will take effect July 1, 2019.
