On Tuesday, Jan. 23, the House of Representatives passed House Bill 1233 – co-authored by State Rep. Sheila Klinker (D-Lafayette). This bill would amend the “allowable expenses” definition for Indiana’s Robotics Competition Program. Robotics teams could use grant funds on expenses associated with a competition, and the bill also expands grant opportunities for community-based teams.

Rep. Klinker released the following statement regarding her robotics legislation:

“As technology develops, education in STEM is vital to the academic success of our students. We must foster our youths' interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Robotics teams are an impactful way for students to foster their interest in STEM. Students develop their problem-solving skills, learn critical thinking, and cultivate their curiosity.

“I was pleased to see House Bill 1233 pass unanimously through the House. It’s important that we provide our schools and communities with ample opportunities. This bill achieves this goal by expanding who can receive grants for robotics competitions. Many of our high schools in Tippecanoe County have robotics teams. A few of them visited the Statehouse – and testified – in support of HB 1233. I believe this bill will continue to encourage our students to pursue a STEM education.”
