The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) has confirmed that it will hold a public hearing on Jan. 23 in Hammond regarding the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) pending natural gas rate hike request. NIPSCO is seeking to increase consumer rates by an initial $16.25 a month and an eventual $25.50 per month. Working to lower utility rates for the average Hoosier is a priority for State Rep. Jackson (D - Hammond) in the 2024 legislative session that started last week.

“This is a great opportunity for residents to get their voices heard regarding NIPSCO's pending request to increase consumer rates,” Jackson said. “With the ever-increasing costs of utilities, hardworking Hoosiers are having to shell out more and more of their paychecks to cover the cost of essential services. The extra $16.25 to $25.50 per month that NIPSCO has requested would add additional pressure to families who may already be struggling to make ends meet.

“I urge all of my neighbors and constituents to attend the public hearing on Jan. 23 to stand up for your right as a consumer and oppose this rate hike request.”

The public hearing takes place at 6 pm on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at Purdue University Northwest, Student Union and Library Building - Alumni Hall, 2233 173rd St. For anyone that wants to submit a public comment online can do so by emailing [email protected] or visit www.in.gov/oucc/2361.htm. The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC) is accepting consumer comments until no later than Jan. 27.
