Jackson celebrates lead testing bill becoming law

IBLC, Media Releases

A bill to require lead testing in childcare facilities has become law. Today, State Rep. Carolyn Jackson’s (D-Hammond) attended a ceremonial bill signing with Governor Eric Holcomb and advocates. House Enrolled Act 1138 was part of a longstanding, bipartisan effort to eliminate lead in Indiana’s drinking water.

Jackson has worked over the years to ensure all Hoosiers have access to safe water. Lead consumption is incredibly dangerous as it accumulates over time. There are several links to permanent impacts on neurological development, the most common being learning and behavioral problems.

“Lead is one of the most dangerous chemicals commonly found in Indiana’s drinking water,” Jackson said. “Coming in contact with lead, especially before the age of five, can negatively impact the trajectory of a child’s life. These commonsense preventive measures ensure the well-being of Hoosier children and give parents peace of mind while their children are at school. This legislation is about ensuring that environments where children play, learn and grow are safe.

“When we work together, we can develop long-lasting and impactful solutions towards creating a lead-free Indiana.”
