Improved education opportunities for minorities a key goal of Rep. Vernon G. Smith’s effort

INDIANAPOLIS - State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) is working to increase the opportunities available for minority students who wish to pursue education as a career.

House Bill 1179, which was approved 93-0 by House members, offers financial relief for minority graduate students who intend to participate in a school administration internship program.

The bill, coauthored by Smith, makes these students eligible for a stipend through the state’s Minority Student Teaching Stipend Fund.

“The legislation will allow more minority students to become involved in education and administration,” said Smith.

“While the Minority Student Teaching Stipend Fund is already available for minority students participating in student teaching programs, House Bill 1179 will extend this fund to cover minority students interested in careers in school administration as well.”

Students with a 3.5 to 4.0 GPA can apply to receive up to $5,000 while students with a GPA of 3.0 to 3.5 can receive up to $4,000 of financial support.

“By supplying this stipend, we can help a number of valuable young educators and administrators stay on the path to graduation,” concluded Smith.

The bill now moves to the Senate for further legislative consideration.
