Hamilton co-sponsors legislation bringing more money to Marion County
State Rep. Carey Hamilton (D-Indianapolis) co-sponsored Senate Bill 283, which recently passed out of the House of Representatives to fix a long-time problem in Marion County's road funding formula and bring $8 million in road funding to the county.
The bipartisan piece of legislation will require Marion County to receive funds from the motor vehicle highway account based on the population of the consolidated city vs. the fire special services district, an out-of-date model that left 1/3 of the city’s population unrepresented. Hamilton issued the following statement today regarding the funding increase:
“It’s long past time to fix this portion of the road funding formula that left Marion County shortchanged $8 million per year. The old formula left 1/3 of the city’s population uncounted, costing the city millions of dollars per year, year after year. Moving forward, I hope we can continue to work together towards more equitable road funding in all parts of the funding formula for Indiana’s largest city - the economic engine of our state.”
