Hamilton celebrates amendment to help Hoosier mothers, families
An amendment added to Senate Bill 419 will make breastfeeding supplies – including breast pumps, collection and storage supplies, as well as repair and replacement parts for breast pump kits – tax-exempt. State Rep. Carey Hamilton (D-Indianapolis), who worked on this language with State Rep. Cherrish Pryor (D-Indianapolis) and is a co-sponsor of the bill, offered the following statement:
“I'm excited that this important amendment was adopted into the bill. This is just one small action that will help Hoosier women and families. This is a common-sense measure, considering that food and medical supplies are already exempt. As such, equipment used to help mother's feed their babies should be exempt from taxes as well.
“If we truly want to prioritize families, we need to do everything we can to help them afford the items they need to be healthy. This amendment is a way to do that, and I'm very pleased to co-sponsor the bill and to have crafted the amendment creating this new tax exemption.”
The legislation passed out of the House of Representatives today and now heads back to the Indiana Senate for concurrence.
