Hamilton attends White House States Convening on child care
On Wednesday, July 19, State Rep. Carey Hamilton (D-Indianapolis), House Democratic Caucus Chair, will attend the Convening of States at the White House to discuss action from state governments on child care policy. Child care access is a priority for the Biden-Harris administration as seen in the President’s budget proposal that would keep the average family cost for child care at $10 a day. Hamilton has introduced numerous bills and amendments to improve Indiana’s child care system and reduce costs since she was elected to the General Assembly in 2016.
“I am honored to have been invited to our nation's capital to meet with fellow state Democratic leaders to discuss childcare access across the United States,” Hamilton said. “Indiana ranks third in the nation for the most expensive child care, yet in the bottom 20 states for child care worker pay.
“Affordable child care strengthens families by freeing up income for needs such as quality food and secure housing and it strengthens our economy by growing a critical component of our workforce – working parents. We urgently need legislation such as a child care tax credit that I have proposed numerous times only to be rejected by GOP lawmakers. Solutions such as this one are vital to support those struggling to raise a family and stay employed. I look forward to meeting with fellow legislators to learn how other states are growing access to affordable childcare.”
